Biography
Born and raised in East Texas, I moved to Austin in 1993 to start college; my horizons and eyes were opened, but I still had growing up to do before I could make it in ATX. After graduating law school, I immediately moved back to Austin - even before I was licensed - as I knew I wanted to build my Criminal Defense practice here. After a very short time of doing work for 2 other Criminal Defense Attorneys, I started the Law Office of Leslie J. Boykin in July of 2005. When I'm not working hard in my practice, I take advantage of all Austin has to offer, but also enjoy spending time with my friends, as well as my 3 dogs and 2 cats. I travel back to East Texas regularly to see my family, and like to ride ATV's, go bass fishing, enjoy relaxing on the porch in the evenings.
Education
JD from South Texas College of Law, Houston, TX - 2004
BA in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, TX - 1999
Litigation Experience
I've tried about a dozen cases in front of a jury, all the way to a verdict, and my win/loss record is about 80/20. My dismissal rate on non-trial cases is approximately 50%.
Notable Cases
In the last 4 years:
*I won a .19 Blood test DWI 1st in Travis County, after I was granted a 38.23 instruction for the jury, and they found my client "Not Guilty" based on lack of valid consent.
*I obtained a hung jury in Caldwell County on a .12 breath test.
*I won a lesser-included Misdemeanor Assault Causing Bodily Injury verdict from a jury on the trial of an Assault Causing Bodily Injury-Strangulation case in Hays County, and the case is now on appeal because the judge denied my request for a Self-Defense instruction to the jury.
Instructional Experience
I've spoken on a few different panels involving Criminal Justice issues, for organizations that include the Austin Bar Association, Austin Young Lawyers' Association, Mission Possible and Circle C Democrats. I've also spoken to Criminal Justice classes at St. Edward's University here in Austin.
