John C. Bateman is the founder of The Bateman Law Firm in Greenville, South Carolina, where he has established himself as a premier DUI defense attorney in the state. With offices throughout the Upstate region of South Carolina, Bateman has built a reputation for his specialized expertise in DUI defense and criminal law. Bateman's legal career began with a strong foundation in military service. He graduated from Davidson College in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in History, where he participated in the U.S. Army ROTC program as a scholarship cadet. He then earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Richmond School of Law in 2008, after which he embarked on a career as a Judge Advocate in the United States Army. During his military service from 2008 to 2012, Bateman gained valuable prosecution experience, conducting court-martials at Fort Jackson. His role expanded when he was sworn in as a Special Assistant United States Attorney, tasked with trying civilian traffic offenses including DUI cases in federal district court. Bateman also served with the 95th Civil Affairs Brigade (Airborne), a subordinate unit of the United States Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg. Upon transitioning from active duty military service, Bateman relocated to Greenville, South Carolina, where he was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 2013 and established The Bateman Law Firm. He is also licensed to practice in North Carolina, having been admitted to that state's bar in 2008. What sets Bateman apart in the field of DUI defense is his extensive specialized training. He has completed the same field sobriety test training as law enforcement officers in South Carolina, and has even been certified as an instructor on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) DUI enforcement curriculum. Notably, Bateman achieved this instructor certification before the curriculum was fully implemented by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, demonstrating his commitment to staying at the forefront of DUI defense techniques. Bateman's expertise and dedication to DUI defense have earned him recognition in the legal community. He is a founding member of the DUI Defense Lawyers Association (DUIDLA) and has been appointed to its Board of Directors, a prestigious position within an organization comprising top-tier DUI defense lawyers from across the United States and Canada. He regularly attends national conferences to enhance his knowledge and skills in trial preparation, execution, and DUI evidence analysis. In addition to his DUI defense work, Bateman handles select criminal matters, including criminal appeals, drug crimes, expungement, fraud, gun crimes, internet crimes, sex crimes, theft, and violent crimes. He has authored "DUI Convictions in South Carolina: Hidden Costs, Serious Consequences," published by Strategy Press in 2015, further establishing his authority in the field. Bateman is actively involved in professional associations, maintaining memberships in the Greenville Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the South Carolina Bar, and the North Carolina Bar. He has been featured on media outlets including WYFF4 and Fox Carolina, raising awareness about DUI defense issues. In his personal life, Bateman enjoys spending time with his wife, Eva, and their three children, Jack, Clark, and Hank. His leisure activities include board games, grilling, and weekend camping trips with his family.
