Douglas E. Huff is a distinguished criminal defense attorney based in Dallas, Texas, with a specialization in DWI defense. Born in Warren, Ohio and raised in western Pennsylvania outside of Pittsburgh, Huff attended Mount Pleasant Area High School before enlisting in the United States Army, where he served honorably for four years and received both the Army Achievement Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. Following his military service, Huff relocated to Austin, Texas, where he worked in business sales for technology companies including Dell Computers, XO Communications, and Time Warner while completing his undergraduate education at St. Edwards University. He then pursued his legal education at St. Mary's University School of Law in San Antonio and also completed an MBA through Florida Institute of Technology. After law school, Huff worked at Barbri, an organization that specializes in helping law students prepare for and pass state bar examinations. During this time, he not only obtained his license to practice in Texas but also successfully passed the Oklahoma Bar. He subsequently established his own practice, The Law Office of Douglas E. Huff in Dallas, where he represented clients facing various misdemeanor and felony criminal charges. In 2013, Huff accepted a position with the Dallas County Public Defender's Office, where he served as lead attorney in numerous DWI trials and other misdemeanor cases. Currently, he is a partner at Deandra Grant Law, a premier criminal defense and DWI law firm that has been defending the rights of accused individuals throughout Texas for nearly 30 years. Huff has established himself as a legal scholar and educator, having authored multiple articles for publications such as Voice for the Defense and Attorney at Law Magazine. He also lectures nationally and throughout Texas on criminal defense strategy and tactics. His recent publications include works on intoxication case law, DWI deferred adjudication, and Texas DWI "superfines." Huff has earned the prestigious Lawyer-Scientist designation from the American Chemical Society after completing specialized courses in Forensic Chromatography, Forensic Drug Analysis, and Forensic Driving Under the Influence of Drugs at Axion Labs in Chicago. Additionally, he has completed both the student course on standardized field sobriety testing (SFST's) and the Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) course—the same training programs that police officers undergo to identify intoxicated drivers. In his personal life, Huff was recently married to his wife Monique, who is also an attorney and a judge. They have an 8-year-old rescue dog named Athena. Outside of his legal practice, Huff enjoys traveling and has visited numerous countries across Europe, Asia, and South America, including walking the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain. Huff credits J.D. Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye" as his inspiration for becoming a criminal defense attorney, embracing the novel's theme of protecting the vulnerable from harm. With over a decade in criminal defense practice, Huff remains passionate about his work, viewing each case as an opportunity to protect those who, "but for the grace of God, could be many of us."
